S-E picks up 9th win of season
OXFORD – The Lady Blackhawks of Oxford used a big second quarter to build a 13 point lead by halftime in their 42-35 win over Midstate Athletic Conference opponent Harpursville Tuesday night.
Oxford made the extra pass several times in the contest, finding the open player who in return knocked down the open jumper or finished the fast break layup. The sharing of the ball is what jumpstarted the second quarter run by the Blackhawks as they went on to out scoring the visiting Lady Hornets 17-5.
Three assists were recorded in the first minute and half of the second as Madalyn Barrows hit back-to-back 3-pointers and Ellie Ryan hit one from behind the 3-point arc for Oxford’s 9-0 run.
A few minutes later, Barrows and Ryan exchanged assists on fast break plays. Barrows came down with a rebound on the defensive end of the floor and took it in for a layup with Ryan trailing. Instead of taking the contest two-footer, Barrows dumped it to Ryan who then put the bucket in for two points.
The next play, Ryan came away with a steal and returned the favor to give Barrows the basket.
Ryan and Barrows combined for nine assists in the contest as they also led the scoring column. Ryan ended the night with 13 points and four assists while Barrows tallied 13 points, five assists and eight rebounds.
